        • The extraordinarily versatile Silverstein (1930–1999) was one of the 20th century’s most imaginative authors and illustrators.

Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree,” published in 1964 by Harper & Row, is about a friendship between a motherly tree and a boy. As the child grows older, the tree gives him its shade, apples, branches and trunk. The story ends with the boy returning as an old man to rest against the tree’s stump. The bestselling tale of selflessness, which is accompanied by the author’s elegantly simple black-and-white illustrations, is considered a classic of children’s literature.

Silverstein’s zany, self-illustrated books of poetry are similarly revered. “Where the Sidewalk Ends” (1974), “A Light in the Attic” (1981), “Falling Up” (1996) and “Every Thing On It” (2011) feature clever and, at times, playfully nonsensical verse that is adored by young people all over the world.

Children are enthralled by Silverstein’s poetry, which is full of fantastical imagery and often deals with the joys and fears of childhood. The four distinctive collections of poetry were bestsellers. The New York Times named “Where the Sidewalk Ends” an Outstanding Book of 1974; Silverstein’s album version of the book earned a Grammy Award for Best Recording for Children.

This stamp design features a photograph of the flag that flies over Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore, MD. This flag is a replica of the one that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” after realizing Fort McHenry had withstood the British attack of Sept.13-14, 1814. The picture of the flag was taken against a backdrop of fireworks during an annual celebration of Defenders’ Day, a legal holiday in the state of Maryland commemorating the successful defense of the city of Baltimore on Sept. 12, 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812. Photographer Gary Clark said it was a challenge to get the fireworks and the flag in the same shot and that “the wind picked up quite a bit that night.” Art director Phil Jordan designed the stamp.

This new stamp features five sunflowers as part of a bright andbeautiful bouquet. As a two-ounce stamp, SunflowerBouquet can accommodate the weight of heavy invitations forbirthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and other celebrations;oversized greeting cards; and mailings such as small gifts thatrequire extra postage. The stamp art is a still life image of several orange-and-yellow sunflowers intermingled with irises, dahlias, echinacea(coneflowers), and other small red, purple, white, and pink flowers against a white background. To create this image, thephotographer backlit the arrangement of flowers on a light box and made eight photographic exposures, resulting in a luminous, transparent look.
Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp with digital photography by Harold Davis. The words "Two Ounce" on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever stamp, this stamp will always be valid for the rateprinted on it.
